about jessie boylanJessie Boylan is a photomedia artist, documentary photographer, community radio producer and freelance journalist based in Melbourne, Australia. Working across a range of media Jessie’s work focuses on human rights, social and environmental justice. Jessie has worked in Palestine and Israel, documenting the aftermath of the 2008-09 Israeli massacre in Gaza, the truth of being a youth in Gaza, to highlighting the plights of internally displaced Palestinian Bedouins in Israel. Since 2005 Jessie has been continuing a body of work around the impact of uranium mining, atomic weapons testings and the nuclear industry on Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australia from the 1950s until today. In 2009 Jessie spent six months working for the Inter Press Service reporting and documenting in remote regions of Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania; from rural farming, health and development issues in the Niassa Province to Female Genital Mutilation in Northwest Tanzania to the impact of gold and uranium mining in Malawi and Tanzania. Jessie won second place in the Friends of the Earth International photography competition in 2009 and has been short-listed for the Qantas Spirit of Youth Art awards, the Head On Photography Awards, and the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Awards. Jessie exhibits regularly in Australia and her photography has been published in Australian and International Publications such as The Big Issue (issues 312 & 331), Arena Magazine Chain Reaction, The Age & Sydney Morning Herald Newspapers, ABC Online and The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre publication.
