i get sunburnti get sunburnt | 2007 It is unnerving to realize that we must “rethink the ground beneath our feet” (Pannell,), that we need to question our occupancy in relation to our origins. With our European cultural and intellectual heritage and the physical/social/cultural/spiritual realities of the Australian continent “we have been lead to constantly re-invent ourselves as a continent and as a people”. (Cameron, 2003) Originally created for my final year fine arts degree as a one off artists’ book, incorporating diary entries, emails and audio; i get sunburnt explores growing up as young white woman with Irish/English heritage in Australia. How do we place ourselves amidst the past? How do we go forward upon these lands? – These questions I asked; but the work evolved in more of a journey, a process through all of this.
